Bringing musicians and audiences together by encouraging sounds to be performed as intentions

The Atlanta Improvisers Orchestra is a supergroup of members of Atlanta's cutting edge experimental music scene, united by composer Ofir Klemperer to explore the possibilities of large group musical improvisation.  The group spontaneously creates exquisite orchestral soundscapes and compositions using the concept of conduction, or conducted improvisation, that harnesses and encourages the unpredictable ideas, individual imaginations, and diverse approaches to music that each musician brings.

Klemperer formed the Atlanta Improvisers Orchestra in 2018, holding bi-monthly rehearsals bringing together members of Atlanta's deeply creative and adventurous music community and galvanizing a burgeoning interest in large group improvisation in the city.

AIO Concerts typically feature 15-20 members, and three or four members of the ensemble leading the group in improvised compositions. We are interested in exploring a variety of performance spaces and modes - collaborations with other artists, like dancers, painters or sculptures are common. We strive to communicate with the audience and some pieces involve audience participation.

The group has performed at Atlanta venues such as eyedrum, No Tomorrow in Atlanta Underground, THE END Project Space, The Bakery, and First Existentialist Church in Candler Park. In September 2018 the group was commissioned to score the music for the Cartoon Network/Adult Swim show “Tender Touches Season 2”.

Recent projects by AIO in 2022 include collaboration with Rob Lundberg and Brett Carson; Ensemble residency in No Tomorrow;  conceptual performances at THE END Project Space as part of Ofir Klemperer and Heidi Schwegler’s collaborative art installation “Future Ruins”; Outdoor performance in Kebby Williams’ Music in the Park Festival in Atlanta’s historic West End;

Upcoming commitments include special interactive, non-verbal performance for Marcus Jewsish Community Center’s Sunshine pre-school in East Cobb; and a Collaborative event with artists Laura Cocks and Jacob Wicks.

Among the members of AIO are many established and prolific figures in the Atlanta music scene, including musicians involved in luminary groups such as Chamber Cartel, Bent Frequency, Hello Ocho, Faun and a Pan Flute, BASrelief, Royal Krunk Jazz Orchestra, Kebbi Williams’ Wolfpack, Mute Sphere, Moloq, The Ghosts Project, Flight of Swallows, as well as with many regional orchestras, ensembles, and popular music acts.

AIO’s members are also distinguished figures in other arts and humanities fields, including Atlanta elementary and secondary arts and music educators, leaders of and contributors to DIY-art and music spaces including Mammal Gallery, the Magic Lantern, and The Cleaners, past board members and board chairs at eyedrum Art & Music, and faculty members at Emory University, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, and Spelman College.
